A truly unique figure in American art and illustration, Edward Gorey was born
in Chicago in 1925 and died at the turn of the millennium. Defying stylistic
description, he has been called an eccentric genius and an Edwardian enigma.
He acknowledged his debt to the traditions of 19th century draughtsmen and novelists, as well as the surrealist movement in 20th century art and literature.
