Festivals in honor of mothers and motherhood go back as far as the ancient
Greek festival for the goddess Rhea, mother of the Gods.
In England in the 1600s, Mothering Sunday emerged and remains a day of celebration
on the fourth Sunday in Lent.
In the United States, Congress passed a resolution in 1914 designating the
second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day requiring the US flag to be displayed
on public buildings and private homes “as a public expression of our
love and reverence for the mothers of our country”.
